Yes, It's Valentine's Evening and My Wife Will Yell At Me...

So I will only take a brief moment to jot down some thoughts before I continue in my posts about Effective Leadership in Professional Learning Communities.  The notion of grouping kids by age alone has been rattling around in my brain throughout the past couple of days.  We haven't figured out a better system than to stamp kids with a manufacture date and send them in to the world.  So we are still very much stuck in the factory model of education.  We talk and have meetings and get excited about possibilities, but many times educators end up feeling the same feeling, "maybe I will try it next year."  Summer comes and goes (and we are usually still working throughout), we get in to in-service mode and before we know it we are back to our old model of instruction.  No one is pointing fingers.  I wouldn't dare.  Maybe we could start more conversations and develop implementation plans that strive for reform that benefits kids...all kids...and benefits teachers...all teachers.  If we want to develop world class thinkers and leaders, let's start doing some world class thinking and leading to bring the richest opportunities to our students.  OK...cupid has struck me...or perhaps Clare is throwing things.

  1. this post is something I completely agree with -- and I think RtI is taking a huge step in confronting this problem, but since it does require the "pull out" system -- which works about as well for education as it does for birth control -- it is still not the best system avilable. And differentiated instruction can be a great resource -- but the student has to feel connected to the intervention or instruction. So, I guess after my mini-rant -- I'm in the same boat you are. I like to think I'm a young enough teacher to make changes/adaptations in my classroom, but even in my second year I sometimes feel that "rut" mode -- do you have any ideas you use to overcome that lack of ambition?
